Thing #54 – Stand in awe at the Salt Flats in Bolivia
Wow wow wow! This has to be one of the highlights of my trip so far. I absolutely love nature and I can safely say I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as beautiful as I did on this four day tour. I set off from a little town called Tupiza in southern Bolivia and finished in the beautiful Salar de Uyuni (salt flats). The entire 1200km trip was filled with stunning landscape after stunning landscape.
The salt flats which was once part of a huge prehistoric lake before it dried up covers an area of over 12,000 sq km and you feel like you are on another planet.
As it’s the rainy season here at the moment the salt flats were covered with a little bit of surface water which projected a perfect mirror image of the clouds. If there is heaven then I hope I looks half as beautiful as Southern Bolivia. Definitely one for you list!
In this video I show you some of the amazing highlights over the 4 day tour and finish up standing in awe at the amazing salts flats of Salar de Uyuni.
Thank you to the amazing singer songwriter Morgan Jago who I met in Panama City for giving me permission to use her beautiful song ‘Pirate, I’ll stay til Monday’. X
Tips for travel
- Book your tour in the town of Tupiza. By going from Tupiza you will miss out on the endless rows of jeeps which leave from Uyuni and you will also get to enjoy the amazing scenery surrounding the town on the first day. You will miss out this scenery if you leave from Uyuni.
- Ask to be in a jeep with a maximum of 4 people. The jeeps are cramped with 5 people so 4 is better and it also means you all get a window seat.
- There is very little walking involved as you are in the 4 x 4 for most of the time so fitness level isn’t an issue. There are early morning starts (4:30am) on the last day but you can always nap in the car.
- Get ready to sit and stand in awe at the most amazing scenery.
